The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully completed a coordinated aeromedical evacuation of two former miners, aged 65 and 73, from Mufulira to Lusaka in a carefully executed two-leg air ambulance operation.
The patients, who are beneficiaries of the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), required specialized medical transportation to Lusaka. The mission commenced with ZFDS Bell 212 helicopter 9J-KDK, piloted by Chief Pilot Zachariah Mbewe and Co-pilot Timothy Gibbs, which departed ZFDS Headquarters in Ndola for Mufulira. The helicopter landed at Shinde Stadium, where officials from the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board formally handed over the patients to the ZFDS medical team.
During the flight from Mufulira to Ndola, Paramedics Suzen Banda and Prince Mwewa continuously monitored the patients’ vital signs, ensuring they remained stable, comfortable, and adequately supported with oxygen throughout the journey.
Upon arrival in Ndola, the patients were seamlessly transferred to ZFDS fixed-wing aircraft 9J-FDS, commanded by Pilots Siphosami Zulu and Elvis Kite, for the onward flight to Lusaka.
The aircraft landed safely at the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Base at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, where an ambulance and medical team from the International Hospital of Lusaka were on standby to receive the patients and facilitate their transfer for specialized medical care.
The successful operation highlights ZFDS’s continued commitment to delivering safe, timely, and coordinated aeromedical evacuation services. Through close collaboration with the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board and other healthcare partners, ZFDS remains dedicated to ensuring that beneficiaries requiring specialized treatment have reliable access to life-saving medical transportation and quality healthcare.
