The ZFDS surgical team in Mwansabombwe also attended to a 57-year-old male patient who with acute abdominal pain that rapidly intensified, leading to his emergency admission at Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital. Upon assessment, the surgical team diagnosed a long-standing inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis).
During the operation, surgeons successfully removed a distended gallbladder that was attached to the liver. Remarkably, they also found and successfully removed a distended colon, which was then skillfully repaired. This intricate double procedure is expected to provide significant relief from the patient's chronic pain. Dr. Michelo highlighted that untreated cholecystitis can lead to gallbladder rupture, a life-threatening condition.
Another patient, a 30-year-old male, also benefited from yesterday's surgical schedule, undergoing a successful repair for bilateral inguinal hernias. This condition, which he had suffered from for over three years, was attributed to excessive physical work, a common predisposition in many communities.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tendai Mweemba said this May 2025 camp is particularly unique, as it includes a consultant endocrinologist, expanding the scope of care to hormone-related conditions. Beyond major surgeries like thyroid, spleen removals, and hernia repairs, the community is directly benefiting from consultations for diabetes, various thyroid conditions, and sub-fertility issues.
This vital collaboration with consultants from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is not only standardizing medical treatments but also empowering the local medical team with enhanced skills in identifying and managing complex conditions.
"The community will no longer have to travel outside the province to seek specialized care, as this expertise is now available right at their doorstep," remarked a hospital official,
The services offered show a profound impact of the ZFDS initiative on local healthcare accessibility and quality.

After four (4) agonizing years battling a debilitating enlarged spleen, a 35-year-old woman from Mwansabombwe has finally found a new lease on life, thanks to a successful two-hour surgical procedure conducted at Ng'anga Bilonda Hospital by Zambia Flying Doctor Service.

The life-saving operation was performed by a dedicated team of surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital flown in by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS).
The patient, whose identity has been withheld for privacy, had endured immense suffering since 2021.
Her condition, a painful consequence of recurrent malaria infections, led her on a frustrating journey through various hospitals in search of a permanent solution, all to no avail.
Her prolonged struggle cast a long shadow over her daily life, but that shadow began to lift yesterday.
The crucial splenectomy commenced promptly at 5 AM, with the ZFDS surgical team working meticulously.
Dr. Felix Michelo, a lead surgeon with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service, emerged from the operating theatre with a sense of triumph.
He described the intricate procedure as complex but ultimately successful, a testament to the team's skill and dedication.
"The procedure was intricate, but we are immensely pleased with the outcome," Dr. Michelo stated, his voice reflecting the gravity and success of the moment. "It has truly given this patient a new lease on life, freeing her from years of chronic illness."
Dr. Michelo also took the opportunity to underscore the critical importance of early detection and prompt treatment for enlarged spleens.
He issued a stern caution, emphasizing that if left unaddressed, the condition can escalate to severe complications, including various blood disorders and the potentially life-threatening rupture of the spleen.
The Ministry of Health continues to support the ZFDS in ensuring that specialized services are provided for all.
