The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has achieved another significant milestone following the approval by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) to upgrade Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital by Zambia Flying Doctor Service from a Level 1 to a Level 2 facility.
This approval was granted after a successful variation inspection conducted on 26th March 2026, followed by an internal review by the HPCZ Council.
Issued under Section 44 of the Health Professions Act No. 17 of 2024, the decision recognizes the hospital’s growing capacity and its strategic role within the Ministry of Health. The Council highlighted the facility’s importance as a referral centre for primary health facilities in Mwansabombwe District, as well as its support to Mansa General Hospital through the provision of specialized services.
The approval was made in the public interest to ensure the continued delivery of essential healthcare services.
With this upgrade to a Level 2 facility, Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital by Zambia Flying Doctor Service will significantly enhance access to inpatient care, emergency services, and specialist treatment for thousands of people in Mwansabombwe and surrounding areas.
This development strengthens the healthcare referral system for rural and hard-to-reach communities, reduces the distance patients must travel for advanced care, and reinforces the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s commitment to improving healthcare access and saving lives.
