The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully conducted an emergency medical evacuation of a 49-year-old female patient from Ndola Teaching Hospital to the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka for specialised management.
Following consultation with specialists at the National Heart Hospital, an emergency referral was recommended.
The urgent request for air ambulance support was made by Dr Misa Funjika, Head of Clinical Care, on behalf of the Senior Medical Superintendent at Ndola Teaching Hospital.
ZFDS promptly responded by transporting the patient by ambulance from Ndola Teaching Hospital to the ZFDS Headquarters. The ground transfer was undertaken by Adrian Mwinuna, with Paramedic Beatrice Chikumbi providing care throughout the journey.
At ZFDS, the patient was transferred onto ZFDS aircraft 9J-FDS, operated by Captain Siphosami Zulu and Captain Elvis Kite. In-flight medical care was provided by Paramedics Prince Mwewa and Suzen Banda.
The patient was safely flown to Lusaka for continued specialised management at the National Heart Hospital.
This evacuation highlights the critical role of ZFDS in providing timely air medical transport and bridging access to specialised healthcare services, particularly for patients whose required care is not readily available at their referring facilities.
