The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) yesterday 12th June ,2026 successfully evacuated a critically ill patient from Luwingu District Hospital in Northern Province to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka for specialised treatment.
The patient, diagnosed with heart failure, hypertension, and Type 1 diabetes mellitus, required urgent advanced medical care beyond the capacity of the district facility. Due to the patient’s condition and the long distance involved, an air evacuation was authorised to ensure timely access to treatment.
The mission was conducted using aircraft 9J-FDS, piloted by Chanda Mumpangwe and Elvis Kite, with onboard medical care provided by Paramedic Paul Siame and Anaesthetist Bupe Musenge.
Following assessment and stabilisation in Kasama, the patient was safely transferred to Lusaka, where a receiving medical team was on standby to continue specialised management.
The successful evacuation highlights the vital role of aeromedical services in providing timely, life-saving care to patients in remote areas.
