The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) today successfully conducted three critical medical evacuations, transporting vulnerable and critically ill patients from different parts of the country to Lusaka for specialized treatment.
In one mission, aircraft 9J-AGC, piloted by Pilots Siphosami Zulu and Elvis Kite, airlifted two Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) beneficiaries and their caregivers from Livingstone to Lusaka, where they were received by a medical team from Fairview Hospital.
ZFDS also evacuated a 46-year-old male patient from Mansa suffering from complicated severe malaria, acute kidney injury, anuria and other conditions . The mission was flown by Director Aviation Services Lasford Manchisi and Chanda Mumpangwe, with flight paramedics Susan Banda and Philip Besa providing medical care throughout the journey.
In a separate inter-provincial operation, ZFDS airlifted a 15-year-old girl from Solwezi General Hospital to Lusaka for specialist treatment of a maxillofacial tumour that had previously caused airway obstruction requiring an emergency tracheostomy. The evacuation was authorized by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi following an urgent referral from Solwezi General Hospital. The flight was conducted by Pilots Chanda Mumpangwe and Captain Siposami Zulu, with paramedics Susan Banda and Philip Besa managing the patient’s condition en route.
Upon arrival in Lusaka, the teenager was transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for specialized surgical care.
These successful missions highlight ZFDS’s continued commitment to providing timely aeromedical evacuation services and ensuring access to life-saving healthcare for patients across Zambia.
