For many of the 120,000 residents of Zimba District in Southern Province, the arrival of the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) is more than a medical visit , it is a lifeline.
"Whenever communities hear that ZFDS is visiting, they become hopeful, knowing that many lives could be impacted," said District Commissioner Rabson Mulamfu.
The district's rugged terrain makes healthcare access difficult, particularly during the rainy season. Mr Mulamfu recalled one incident in Kamukeza where an ambulance was swept away by strong currents while attempting to reach patients.
"They know these outreaches save lives that would otherwise be at risk due to isolation," he said.
The district also lacks specialist services, forcing many families to travel long distances for treatment they cannot access locally.
ZFDS team arrived on Monday for a week-long outreach running until Sunday.
A medical team is visiting seven rural health facilities across the district, while a specialist surgical team is based at the district hospital to carry out operations.
