A 68-year-old woman has undergone complex surgery at Luangwa District Hospital,Lusaka province following a brutal crocodile attack on the Zambezi River two weeks ago.
The life-saving procedure was performed by Dr. Michael Kazadi, a skilled orthopedic surgeon working on an outreach program with the Zambia Flying Doctor Service.
The attack left the patient with severe and extensive injuries, including a severe hip fracture, numerous crocodile bites, and deep wounds to her forearm and thighs.
Dr. Kazadi immediately conducted the operation, which was crucial to her survival and recovery.
During the surgery, Dr. Kazadi and his team namely Reuben Zimba, Purity Mweetwa anesthetist , Clyde Mweemba theater nurse ,Elias Daka and Evaristo Zimba meticulously cleaned and debrided the multiple wounds, a critical step involving the removal of all damaged tissue.
Following this, the wounds were carefully closed.
Dr. Kazadi also precisely addressed the patient's hip fracture and wound closure during the procedure.
"Her injuries were quite extensive, but we are very optimistic about her healing," Dr. Kazadi commented. "We anticipate she will make an excellent recovery."
The timely and specialized care provided highlights the critical importance of expert medical intervention in such critical and urgent circumstances, especially in remote areas.
