The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) continues to redefine rural healthcare delivery, with Ng’anga Bilonda Hospital in Mwansabombwe District recording 8,750 patients attended to and zero maternal deaths since the Service took over operations.
During a tour of the facility, Minister of Health Dr. Alex Katakwe described this milestone as clear evidence that quality, specialized healthcare can be delivered even in the most remote parts of Zambia.
At the heart of this success is a strengthened system of care. Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tendai Mweemba highlighted that the introduction of 24-hour outpatient services, ICU care, surgical services, and expanded maternity care has significantly improved patient outcomes.
ZFDS Chief Executive Officer Dr. George Ng’uni reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to expanding its impact across Luapula Province, with a strong focus on underserved communities, including small-scale miners.
Dr. Ng’uni added that the use of air support helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft remains critical in improving emergency response and reaching hard-to-access areas.
Luapula Province Minister Nason Musonda praised the initiative, noting Government’s continued commitment to strengthening health infrastructure in the region.
Meanwhile, Mwansabombwe District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa called for the construction of a mothers’ shelter and improved water supply to match the growing demand for services at the hospital.
From life-saving surgeries to safe deliveries, ZFDS is not just providing healthcare it is restoring hope and building a healthier future for communities.
